In Washington Carter aims to see a final Egyptian Israeli peace treaty during his Mideast mission. Cairo and Jerusalem sources say the signing could come soon after renewed U S mediation and talks with Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin.
Hanoi and Vietnamese state media debated Beijing's pullout on Monday while reporting ongoing battles in Lang Son and Hoang Lien Son. Vietnam mobilized nationwide defense efforts as Hanoi News Agency noted Chinese aims achieved in the border war.

Tokyo AP reports a large Soviet tank landing ship the Alligator with 300 troops and 30 tanks heading south off Japan escorted by a Krivak class destroyer. Japan says the cruise is the first since the China Vietnam border war began February 1 and that the mission’s destination remains unconfirmed.
