Voyager 1 passed within 172 744 miles of Jupiter and began its 20 month voyage to Saturn. Cameras sent back black and white then color images while a photopolarimeter faced a temporary shutdown amid intense radiation. Jupiter's moons Amalthea and others were photographed as swirled cloud patterns and dark ovals appeared in the Jovian atmosphere.
