Virginia voters weigh a limited constitutional convention to waive poll tax and registration for armed services members. In Richmond a congressional race drew lines as rain and mud slow statewide turnout. Governor Darden backs the plan emphasizing service members voting access, while opponents fear broader changes to the constitution.
RAF daylight raids target the Zalzbergen oil refinery near Munster and Chemnitz rail hubs as part of a two day Allied onslaught. The night attack on Chemnitz, Bohlen, Mannheim, and Gelsenkirchen totaled about four thousand tons of explosives with many planes missing from the mission.
American forces reached the Ringstrasse and pushed German defenders into the old city as Cologne teeters on collapse. Ninth Army north of Neuss and Dusseldorf suburbs cleared pockets while Patton’s forces pressed toward Koblenz and Bonn amid heavy bombardment.
U S Pacific Fleet and Washington reports confirm brutal 16 day battle on Iwo Jima with over 2000 Marines killed and more than 12000 Japanese casualties. Leathernecks hold two thirds of the island as navy hunts decisive assault to put fighters within range of Japan.

Only 112 city voters had cast ballots by 1 PM in a special election on calling a Constitutional convention to amend the State Constitution and allow armed forces voting without poll tax payments. Early precincts showed 55 at Rouss, 24 at Friendship, 20 at Sarah Zane, 13 at City Hall with 8. Grim as first at noon. Polls opened 7:23 AM and close at 6:59 PM. officials expect quick tabulation amid broad local support for the convention.
Mrs. Joseph Herring of 538 Highland Avenue received a letter from her son Pfc. Lewis R. Herring missing in action in Germany since December 17. The note, censored in places, suggests he is a prisoner of war though not confirmed by the Red Cross or War Department. He asks for canned food cigarettes and cookies and says he feels he will be home soon.

The Ohio and Mississippi rivers and many rain swollen tributaries surged toward disaster from Pittsburgh to Memphis. Three inches of rain fed rising waters that forced thousands from homes and threatened arsenal plants as the Ohio neared 70 feet at Cincinnati.
Winchester Junior Board of Trade postpones the Friday dinner after Mearns Gates enters Johns Hopkins Hospital for a physical checkup. Gates was to speak in Winchester and visit surrounding Jaycee groups. refunds offered for tickets.
War Department telegrams Pvt. Odell Lupton of Highview West Virginia was killed in action in Belgium in January. He was 20, entered service in 1943, trained at Camp Atterbury Indiana and Camp C Sour Carolina, then served in England France and Holland before Belgium. Survived by wife Wilda LaFollette and two month old daughter Judy Lane, plus parents, five sisters and three brothers.
Mrs Fannie B Sencindiver widow of Turner B Sencindiver died Monday at 5 50 pm at the home of her daughter Ms H W Ebert 117 South Stewart street after a short illness She had lived with her daughter since her husbands death May 23 1929 She was born August 23 1862 near Gerrardstown West Virginia eldest of nine children of David Fries and Rachel Hott She married Turner Ball Sencindiver November 4 1885 and had several children including Charles M Sencindiver Allen H Pittsnoyte David H Sencindiver Samuel Sencindiver Turner B Sencindiver Jr J Fred Sencindiver who died in 1926
Manila reports General Douglas MacArthur announced the destruction of six of the ten Japanese divisions on Luzon. Remaining forces are bottled up in the mountains under continuous attack as the campaign continues. The tally suggests nearly 100,000 Japanese troops involved in Luzon.
George T. Sanders reports Winchester and Frederick County Red Cross War Fund raised 6878 25 toward a 28100 goal. Committees and local groups contributed while late start and transport issues slowed progress. Support from churches ministers associations and radio plans helped push the drive with local merchants adding window displays and new volunteers.
Dr George H Denny chair of the Virginia Education Commission will headline the town meeting in Winchester on Friday March 16 at the Sarah Zane Fire Hall. Sponsored by the Lions Club AAUW and Junior Board of Trade the event invites all residents of Frederick County and nearby to hear recommendations from the Denny Report on improving Virginia’s public schools.
Berryville Virginia March 6 A special committee urged by the Clarke county chamber of commerce warned the proposed 40 million dollar dam on the Shenandoah River at Millville West Virginia would be seriously detrimental to Clarke county The chamber unanimously adopted a resolution opposing construction The report was presented by committee chairman J Edward Thoma Moore led the discussion tracing the plan from 1937 Congress resolution through the survey to date The dam would flood about 8000 acres of rich Clarke county soil continued on page 2 col 2
Mrs. James P. Reardon of 714 South Stewart Street reports her nephew 1st Lt. Hary B. Colborn from Fairmont West Virginia is missing in action in Germany since February 8. Lt. Colborn served with General Patton and is the son of a prominent Fairmont lawyer.
War Department lists 1 741 U S soldiers held as prisoners of war in Germany. Included are Pfc. Duane W Hockman son of Mrs Elizabeth W Hockman of 720 South Kent street and Pfc. Stanley L Richard whose wife lives on Route 2 Woodstock.
