The first federal post office for Winchester was established by law in 1791 sending a weekly mail to Alexandria from May 2 and then daily mail in due course. Daniel Norton, Winchester merchant, was named postmaster. Norton urged early mailing to avoid delays and encouraged using the carriage of newspapers for faster delivery.
The city and county’s outstanding young man of 1947 will be honored Friday at the Junior Board of Trade Founders Day dinner at York Inn. Rep. Olin Teague will address attendees and present the year’s golden key award. Adm. L M Nulton will receive a safe driver citation.

Clarke county coroner Dr. Frank E. Tappan said Irvin Weller, 51, was found dead in his car Sunday morning and died by self-inflicted carbon monoxide poisoning via a rubber hose. Weller, a Pennsylvanian native living with Frank Galloway at Castleman’s Ferry, had declined to attend a movie that night. Two notes were found, and the body was shipped to Girardville for services.

A plan to close the Winchester Veterans Administration office is to be discussed at the Hoover-Conrad American Legion post meeting tonight. Officials indicate possible consolidation with Charlottesville around April due to a cut in current year appropriations. The Winchester office serves eight counties including Frederick Clarke Warren and Shenandoah and employs eight people. Local members may decide steps to maintain the Winchester VA office. White Mrs. Herbert Solenberger Mrs. Ralph aio and Mrs. Lewis Hyde. The group discussed a 1947 drive likely to fall short of the $34 000 goal with quarterly payments based on progress. Mrs. James E. Rathmell rushed home from Wilmington to the DuPont estate near Greenville and found her house burned to the ground. The loss was estimated over 15000 dollars. The blaze occurred while the Rathmell family was away and origin remains undetermined.
Nashville report says VP Governor McCord commuted Daniel Budzynski to 99 years imprisonment, sparing the death penalty. The clemency followed a request from Jeanne Clair Lucas, a 20-year-old Pittsburgh Sunday school teacher, who had traveled to plead for her sweetheart's life.
