Hoye Riley announces Roy T. Cather will assist Parade Director Leonard Sirbaugh and handle parade float materials. Materials sold at cost on a nonprofit basis with help offered for float design. Early arrangements urged to avoid final rush. Bands from Bedford Mount Union and Dallastown accept festival invitations.
In Edinburg Idaho a mysterious intruder killed Mr and Mrs Paul Brand and attacked their 12 year old daughter after midnight. The surviving girl said she hid with her younger siblings until 6 am and police found the couple dead. A .22 caliber shot killed Mrs Brand and investigators have not yet determined Mr Brand’s cause of death. State Police broadcast a description of a missing 1935 Buick and seek a 25 year old man who had visited the home. The child remains hysterical and unable to fully answer questions.
Union employees of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation began a strike in St. Louis on March 1, halting production including structural parts for 100 airplanes ordered by the French government.
Ma Winchester praises Gore section high school noting good equipment and management. Currently 167 students attend with expected rise as Hayfield school may close and send pupils to Gore. Ma Winchester offers best wishes to students and staff.
The Shenandoah District of the Cooperative Education Association will hold its annual meeting in Winchester on Wednesday March 22. A large district turnout is expected. Mrs George A Williams of Harrisonburg Va chairman announces an unusually interesting program and a year long effort by local associations will be presented. The move toward Parent Teacher Associations in Frederick County communities is noted as the work is slated to begin soon.
The Lenten service will be conducted tonight at 7 30 by Rev J P Derrick pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Woodstock Va. The Women's Missionary Society holds three oclock afternoon meetings during the week of prayer and they are well attended.
Deputy Sheriff Robert W Buckner announced his candidacy for Clarke county sheriff in the Democratic primary. He is a regular deputy and jailer since 1936 and plans to move his home to Berryville if elected. Buckner, 52, one-time farmer and dairyman, is married to Miss Mossie Feltner and has five children. He follows rival candidate Cap Smallwood Jr who announced earlier.
The Friendship Fire Company will hold its regular monthly meeting at 8 o'clock Thursday evening March 2, 1939 in the company hall. State Senator T. R. Cather will discuss Firemen's Insurance. Il liam Argenbright.
Berryville Virginia held an afternoon dedication for its new post office the first built in town since 1870. The ceremony featured Robertson as master of ceremonies with the High School band, invocation by Dr L A Parker and a flag raising by Headquarters Company 91st Infantry Brigade. Speakers included Senator Harry F Byrd and Assistant Postmaster General Smith W Purdum. The building, Colonial in design, uses Georgia granite steps and terrazzo floor with pink Tennessee marble and red birch woodwork finished in French gray. contractor L B Gallimore of Greensboro North Carolina is to finish by March 18.
Secretary Perkins said she would convene a peace negotiating committee within a week as the AFL and CIO prepare to renew talks to end the long labor dispute involving millions of workers. CIO President John L. Lewis and AFL head William Green signal a joint effort after Roosevelt’s call for unity.
Citizens with claims against the City of Winchester for actions since January 1, 1935 must present them to the City Council by the regular meeting on March 7, 1939. City Manager Arthur M. Field signs the notice.

Plans approved by the church elders and deacons call for a new two story brick Sunday School building on the south lot joining the existing annex. The project, including renovations to the old building, costs about 20000 dollars and aims to serve about 600 pupils, with space for church offices nursery and multiple departments. Architects are Ian C. MacCallum and Dr Edward E. Tralle. Building and finance committees are named and work to begin soon.
Mr Skelton died in Hartwell Georgia this morning. His daughter Mrs E B McGukin of Knoxville Tennessee and her husband Rev E B McGukin were notified by telegram and had recently traveled to Hartwell as his condition worsened. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Thursday. The McGukins will mourn along with many friends here. He left the Loudoun Street Church pastorate for Knoxville about two years ago.
Harrisburg March 1 sweeping changes to Pennsylvania marriage law aim to ban child marriages prevent unions by diseased or intoxicated individuals and require medical certificates for communicable diseases and mental capacity possible penalties include fines for false statements. The bill would tighten consent rules for minors require court approval for under 21 and allow court authorized declarations without clergy with a three day waiting period retained.
Judge Snow of Alexandria will deliver the principal address at the Clarke Game and Fish Protective Association annual banquet in Berryville at seven this evening. Carl F. Nolting and W D Hart of the State Game Commission are among the speakers. About 200 guests expected.
I N Good prominent Winchester businessman died at Memorial Hospital at 7 this morning after a two week pneumonia illness. He led Winchester real estate activities with an Roust avenue office and served Braddock Street Methodist Church as steward and trustee. Survived by widow and son George W. Good of Wilmington. Funeral plans to be announced tomorrow.

Mrs. Alice Lupton Woods widow of Rev. Dr. William Hervey Woods and mother of artist Leslie Neill Woods died early this morning at Edgewood Sanitarium Baltimore after a fall last Thanksgiving Day. Born June 17 1854 in Frederick County she spent much of her life in Winchester where her father once served as mayor.
