Lake Success June 30 A reliable informant reports ground troops air power and naval units valued in a proposed world police force. US proposes 1250 planes 15 ships 84 destroyers 90 submarines while France Britain and China offer varying totals. Totals are minimum estimates and tentative.
The government lowered the American flag over more than 500 soft coal mines and returned pits to owners after 18 months of federal operation. A final decision on the contract dispute remains unresolved, with a 10 day vacation ending July 8. If owners fail to resume operations by then, miners may stay home. The mines are to be delivered in the same condition as 13 months earlier.
Six of eight clubs from each league are represented in the American and National league starting lineups chosen by fans for the fourth annual All Star Game at Chicago's Wrigley Field on July 8. Wholesale index shows 43.6 percent year over year increase from 122.28 to 175.64 with May at 155.8 on a 1935-39 base. Meats up 52.2 percent and fats and oils up 58.6 percent while eggs fruits and beverages also rose.
In the Winchester Berryville area farmers face higher Chicago corn prices that raise broiler ration costs. Local traders note little corn sold locally, with most growers feeding home supplies. Hog feed demand drops as farmers rely on self produced corn and store prices stay high.
The Super Service Motor Freight Co. started operations at a new terminal on U S Route 11 one mile north of the city. General manager R M Won of Nashville and assistant terminal manager James R. Gen Gallaudet Maj Andre Louis tauneau Lacy and other officers were arrested amid claims of possible army involvement and a planned Commun ist driven provisional directorate.
C W Hollis retires on his last day as chief of Winchester police after almost 50 years in law enforcement. Capt J Thomas Boyd succeeds him, having joined the force in 1924 and serving as night chief since 1930. Hollis, 73, plans to take it easy, and credits loyal cooperation from the police force and commissioner. Boyd was born in 1902 in Frederick County and is married to Kathleen Flowers.
Rev Forest B Oglesby pastor of Fort Hill Methodist in Lynchburg named district superintendent of the Winchester district succeeding the late Dr W E Thomas. Bishop Peele announced from Richmond that Oglesby will take office August 15 and head thirty parishes across northern Virginia Shenandoah valley to near Harrisonburg.
The government charged ex-Congressman Andrew J. May with taking more than 50 000 in wartime bribes from the Garsson munitions combine. Assistant Prosecutor John T. Redden outlined the case as defense attorneys prepared to begin closing statements and the jury nears verdict.
President Truman staged a measure to extend the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for another year and curb its powers. The bill bans RFC from making foreign loans and caps new borrowing at 2 billion dollars, preventing RFC's expiry at midnight.

A growing coal shortage idled about 16,000 steel and railroad workers as coal mines were returned to owners. About 10,000 fired at Carnegie-Illinois Steel, 4,000 at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, plus furloughs at Republic, Sharon, Wheeling. railroad crews affected in Roanoke and Alabama.
