Rain drenched the Mississippi basin causing levee breaches from Dupo Illinois to Grand Tower Illinois and flooding 29 000 acres. Flood waters rose to 39 6 feet the highest in 103 years prompting evacuations of Carondelet and nearby towns with thousands displaced. Flood-damaged waterfront districts in St Louis and surrounding areas reported outages and street flooding.

Streamliner Collides Open Switch Injuring 56 Near Westville
The Baltimore and Ohio Columbian bound from Chicago to Washington hit an open switch at 78 miles an hour injuring 56 aboard. Eight of nine cars derailed but did not overturn, the locomotive and the next car stayed on track. About 180 passengers were aboard. many continued on Capitol Limited. Passengers described the scene as bedlam with luggage falling and people in aisles.

He left 5000 to a Winchester girl intended as his fiancée and stated she must remain unmarried to receive it. The will witnessed by 2nd Lt George D Cough who was killed. Hartman died on a Japanese ship evacuating prisoners. Seven war criminals face Tokyo trial for the deaths of about 1300 American POWs including Hartman and Cough. The will also bequeathed 5000 to his mother Dora A Hartman and sister Ethel E Hartman.
