Muhammad Ali faced four years with the threat of jail after refusing Army induction. He said he would accept prison if needed, arguing his stance was honorable and tied to his life purpose. He prepared for possible separation from his family while pursuing his beliefs.
Joseph Colombo Sr. a reputed New York City underworld boss was shot in the head at an Italian American unity rally in Columbus Circle midtown Manhattan. A Roosevelt Hospital spokesman said he was in critical condition. A second person died on arrival.
