Spread of Shipyard Strike Predicted
New York reports the CIO Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers warned a 40 000 worker strike could spread to about 120 000 on the East and Gulf coasts next Tuesday. The walkout, now in its third day, has shut down 10 yards including nine Bethlehem Steel plants. Regional director Charles A Leone said there is little hope for a halt to further walkouts. The union seeks a 13 cent hourly raise and other benefits, while Bethlehem claims it cannot afford more labor costs.
