New 3-Cent Stamps Arrive At Winchester Post Office
The Winchester post office receives the new 3-cent U. S. stamp for use with the July 6 rate change. Los Angeles Olympic mail uses the stamp, while Washington’s purple 3-cent replaces the Lincoln design. Postmaster Stouffer coordinates with firms to ease the transition and warns against exchanging 2-cent stamps. Air mail postage rises July 1 from 5 to 8 cents first ounce, plus 1 cent per additional ounce. The Washington bicentennial stamp replaces the Lincoln image on the 3-cent stamp, aligning with the era’s currency and symbols.
