The Chicago convention opens with Roosevelt supporters dominating committees while opposition shelves its latest bid. Chairman Raskob urges submitting repeal of the 18th amendment to state conventions. Senator Barkley presides as temp chairman amid a formal start and underlying tensions.

In Flemington New Jersey on June 27 the Curtis Lindbergh hoax case opened with the judge denying a defense motion to remove special assistant prosecutor Harry Stout. The defense sought dismissal of the indictment and a bill of particulars while Curtis sat at the defense table and watched Col. Charles A. Lindbergh across the room during arguments.

Mrs Elizabeth Burkholder Merkling a native of Vaucluse Virginia died in a Washington private sanatorium at 6 AM Sunday after a lingering illness. She was a devout Catholic and sister of three women and two brothers. Funeral at St Charles Church Clarendon with interment Mount Olivet. She traveled widely and helped the sick and needy.
Virginia and North Carolina race horse trainer and driver Thomas Cannon died last Friday in a Norfolk hospital. Known as Uncle Tom, he trained trotting and pacing horses and managed racing programs for the Shenandoah Valley track and the local fair society, also serving as a starter. His body was sent to Durham, North Carolina, for burial.

Cyril Mee a local hotel and tourist camp proprietor learned of the death of his mother Mrs Georgeina Mee in Adelaide South Australia She was about 82 and had not been in good health Her survivors include two sons Albert T Mee and Olivia M Farrant both of Adelaide and a son in this city Mrs Mee and her husband John H Mee lived in South Australia for years Their son Mr Mee died about a year ago while traveling in Africa.
A severe Sunday flood in south central Oklahoma killed six people. Thirteen people fell into Rush Creek when a small bridge collapsed while a wagon crossed after church services. Three children drowned. Mrs. John Lindsey and Mrs. Calvin Lindsey were recovered. Near Tishomingo, Thomas D Wade, 25, drowned when his car went off a washed out bridge approach. Universities plan retrenchment and stricter discipline for students.
Gen F E Bamford 69 veteran of Cantigny died suddenly in Charles Town West Virginia He was retired from the army and had lived in West Virginia part of the last decade A native of Maryland his widow Martha Byrd of Richmond survives Gen John J Pershing paid tribute to him in a war book.
In Morgantown West Virginia June 27 a coal mine strike shooting at the Maidsville mine of the Kelleys Creek Collery Company left one miner dead and several others wounded two seriously. The dead man is James Shaffer about 30 a striking miner. The two gravely wounded may die and others are hospitalized in Monongalia County.

Maxime Olewski boarded the Georges Philharmat in the Arabian Sea and helped rescue many passengers after the ship sank. For his actions the court gave eight days in prison with a suspended sentence.
