Folk Mass Priest Leads Unusual Service in Salt Lake City

In Salt Lake City at St Mark's Episcopal Church the Rev Ian Douglas Mitchell 38 conducted an American folk song mass before more than 600 worshippers using two guitars a banjo two bass players and a choir. Mitchell who studied at Nashotah House Theological Seminary began the idea in 1958 as an experiment to study folk song in liturgy and by 1964 the score was published and the mass widely discussed. He believes folk music won't replace traditional church music but offers a change and has lived with his family on a Navajo reservation while serving in Utah.
