A pair of blasts hit the My Canh floating restaurant on the Saigon River killing 40 to 50 people, many Americans, with 17 dead and 24 wounded initially. Investigators suspect a Claymore mine and a bicycle bomb. crowds, including mothers and children, were struck as authorities pledged tight security and continued the search.
A Boeing 707 military transport carrying 84 Marines and 12 Air Force crew crashed after takeoff from El Toro base north of Los Angeles. Marines from Camp Pendleton were bound for deployment. next of kin notices were being sent as rescue operations continued.

Hanoi Radio announced the Viet Cong executed U S Army Sgt Harold George Bennett in reprisal for South Vietnamese actions. The Frederick County School Board accepted the new Frederick County Junior High School built west of Fox Drive for the 1965-66 session with about 1,000 pupils in grades seven and eight. Principal James L. Givens, a Giles County native, will lead the school. orientation for students and parents is planned around August 1. The $1,321,000 building and site, financed by the Virginia Supplement Retirement System loan and county building levy, excludes equipment.
