Southern soldiers welcomed by few women in New York
About 1,400 wounded Southern soldiers await homeward touches at New York debarkation hospitals. Mrs. Leroy Broun leads the Hall of States welcome effort but cannot recruit enough volunteers from Alabama Arkansas North Carolina Florida Georgia Louisiana Mississippi Virginia and West Virginia. The Sewannee House hosts southern soldiers while many rely on letters and state desks. An employment bureau helps place veterans back home and Miss Elvira B. Wright and Mrs. Alfred Spencer assist, with state chairmen limited by illness and absence.
