Post and Gatty set a record time as they depart for MOSCE on Tuesday. Reported by observers, the voyage is described as a joyous trip with smooth ocean passage and quick progress.
The ninth annual Virginia department encampment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars concluded with Charlottesville seating plans and a long list of officers. Luther T. Snell of Portsmouth was named commander, with J. H. Falwell of Roanoke as senior vice commander and D. Lawrence Dover of Harrisonburg as junior vice commander. Dr. Benjamin B. Washington June 24 President Hoover proclaimed increased tariff duties on three commodities and decreases on four others The President approved Tariff Commission recommendations and suggested no change in duties on five commodities including pig iron hides and skins olive oil in bulk and cheese Dried eggs hemp cordage and small bells for bicycles and velocipedes saw duty increases while bent wood furniture olive oil in packages and pipe organs and parts saw decreases
The Pennsylvania Railroad lowered its annual common dividend from 4 to 3 dollars per share. Directors approved a 10 percent salary reduction for executives and officers. The active electrification and terminal improvement program between New York and Washington will continue, funded for 1931.
A deed is recorded in the Corporation clerk's office showing the sale of barber shop operations owned by James Cave at 133 North Loudoun Street to John N. Turner and Lloyd E. Layman. The $5,000 price is reported as the highest ever paid for a barber shop in the city.
A blaze at Thirteenth Lake destroyed the Thirteenth Lake house killing E. O. Weiss a 50 year old New York City druggist and Paul Owen a 12 year old from Rotterdam.
