Gertrude Ederle Sets Record in 21 Mile Channel Swim
Seventeen year old Gertrude Ederle swam the 21 miles from Battery Wall in New York to Sandy Hook setting a new course record of 7 hours 11 minutes. She broke the previous mark of 7 hours 1 minute held by George R. Meehan of Boston on July 20, 1914. This triumph marked a historic achievement for the young swimmer.
