Paris dispatch describes General Pershing directing war preparations in France with industrial efficiency. The U S camp in France is growing to resemble Chicago, with vast huts, rail and highway surveys, large food stores, sanitary measures, and ammunition stockpiles. The piece lauds American ingenuity and constructive ability in organizing a massive war effort.
Prices paid today in grain markets show spot wheat at 2.45 and corn at 18.80. Local dealers offered 2.00 for wheat after the Baltimore market close. Community notices include Red Cross support and bank donations arranged by the Commercial and Savings Bank. Mr. William M. Swimley traveled to Charles Town to visit relatives in West Virginia.
Guests travel from Pittsburgh and West Virginia for the marriage of Moble Creighton Tabb and Alexander Parker Lyon at the Presbyterian Church in Winchester. The service is led by Rev. Dr. Alfred Jones with music by Ellen Boyd and Hugh S. Duffer as featured soloist.

Washington June 22 Senate interstate commerce committee began considering Senator Pomerene's resolution to let the President fix coal prices and, if needed, take over mines. Pomerene says there is no real shortage and high prices result from dealer gouging. The measure is backed by the President and the FTC.
Communities nationwide push beyond initial $160 million goal as Winchester and nearby areas report solid early support. Aiming for larger turnout by Sunday June 24 when church collections will be held, Plains Virginia and Summerville South Carolina lead in surpassing their apportionments with Plains raising toward a $10 000 target and Summerville exceeding its allotment.
A special sermon will be preached Sunday morning at the Presbyterian Church focusing on the Red Cross. A collection will be taken during the service to support Red Cross efforts.

The third annual Baltimore Conference Epworth League session will meet June 28 to July 1 at Braddock Street M E Church South Winchester. More than 200 delegates from eight districts across Maryland West Virginia DC and Virginia attend with special rail service and local receptions arranged.
The State Corporation Commission at Richmond granted a charter to the People’s Drug Company, Incorporated, of Winchester with paid up capital of $8,000. Attorney James P. Reardon is named president and George B. Bushnell secretary. The firm plans to operate a drug business and will open in the Bushnell building on North Main Street, recently vacated by Mr. Livick.
Paris reports a fierce German counteroffensive along the Aisne and in Champagne with heavy bombardment. German forces breached Mont Peton positions before being repelled, while French raiders near Lafore seized prisoners. In Lorraine a German surprise attack failed. British raids near Queant on the Arras front yielded trench incursions and bomb damage.
Washington reports confirmation of Alfredo Cocchi s arrest in Italy on a murder charge in New York last February. He is held by Italian authorities and will be extradited to the United States as soon as possible. Police shake up looms in New York. Capt. Alfonso Cooper and three detectives relieved of duty as investigators probe Cocchi case and possible buried victims at his shop.
Marshall Baker, a Winchester Boy Scout leader and Troop No. 1 scoutmaster, fell gravely ill from ptomaine poisoning at the Stewart Bell farm camp four miles southwest of Winchester. Companions Brank Silver and Morris Pifer found him and helped secure aid. doctors expect recovery with rest.
The Citizens' Band performs this evening at City Hall Plaza starting at 6 30 o clock. The program includes Mariee seen Waltz Poor Butterfly Sousa Star Spangled Banner and more. A benefit sale June 20 supports the band with music furnished and all welcome. Mary Miller and Bryson Smith travel to Clarksburg West Virginia to visit Miss Hillard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hart.
Miss Lucy Burns of New York and Miss Katharine Morey of Boston were arrested after a banner protest at the White House. Police seized the banner, charged them with violation of the District peace and order law, and held them briefly before release on recognizance. The inscription proclaimed democracy and the right of those under authority to have a voice in government.
Major-General W B Freeman commends Virginia veterans for their strong showing at the twenty-seventh annual United Confederate Veterans reunion in Washington June 5 to 7. He calls the gathering one of the greatest in association history and hopes for beneficial results from the southern leadership displayed in the nation's capital.
