A U boat was rammed and sunk by an American destroyer off a British base. The incident occurred as the destroyer crew, cooperating with Allied forces, sighted the periscope and collided with the sub. An American sailor aboard, whose German parents live in the United States, shouted There she is. The sub capsized and sank after the collision.

An order in Winchester Corporation Court freed Josep Steflin from jail on health grounds. Dr. G L Miller certified that further imprisonment endangers his health, releasing him until December 11 unless the $50 fine and costs are paid or he returns to jail in good health to finish the sentence.
All girls over sixteen who wish to join Unit No. 5 of the War Relief are asked to meet at Mrs. Holmes Conrad's residence on Saturday June 25 at 10 30 am. A fee of $1.1iptf is noted and sugar prices listed as 7 75 per 100 pounds at BRELT and RITTER'S.
Richmond dispatch reports mayor of a Virginia town, urged by Richard Byrd, to supply names of street corner loiterers aged eighteen to fifty who cannot prove they earn an honest living. He began reform by inspecting his own life and setting his house in order. Continued on page four.
The Virginia Military Institute plans a two month intensive training course this summer from June 20 to August 20, 1917. It aims to prepare young men for national service with drills and instruction comparable to U S government training camps. (Continued on page six.)

F. J. Griffith, a cattle dealer from near Gerardstown Berkeley county West Virginia, forfeited ten dollars and costs in police court for failing to pay the proper toll at the Martinsburg road tollgate. He had claimed a direct route from Welltown road om to Martinsburg pike but took a circuitous path and joined the pike below Welltown road. In a separate note the Commercial and Savines Bank announces it will collect and forward Red Cross contributions at no cost. LOST oblong pin offered reward by Star office.
H W Holinberger, Cumberland Valley Railroad agent in Winchester, attended the funeral of his father William A Holinberger in Chambersburg Pa after he died Tuesday evening at his daughter's home in Hagerstown Md He is survived by two children and a sister Ann Brenisholtz of Greencastle Pa He was 74. The Chambersburg Repository notes he long worked with Hoke and Appenzeller's dry goods in Chambersburg.
Richmond Virginia announced it exceeded its Red Cross quota with less than two days to go of a seven day limit. The city set a 500000 dollar target and raised over 300000 dollars in that short period. Winchester posted a 5000 dollar quota to be met by next Monday. Will you do your share toward the coal. This does not mean the other fellow.
President Wilson proclaims June 28 to 30 as recruiting week for the regular army and urges unmarried men without dependents aged eighteen to forty to enroll for war service to promptly fill the ranks.
Virginia, in the Sixth District, reports subscriptions totaling 25,894,800 with North Carolina at 976,700 and South Carolina at 8,926,150 as part of the Liberty Loan drive. The figures were released by the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond.
The Hagerstown Globe reports Co. M. McCauley was arrested by Sheriff Long in Winchester and held by Justice Bitner in $200 bail for a hearing tomorrow. He allegedly received auto parts from Mr. Taylor Williamsport to repair a car but stole them instead.
Clarke county residents, including 195 subscribers, bought Liberty Bonds in excess of expected. Three local banks sold over 46 000 dollars with additional purchases from other communities, marking a strong patriotic turnout and county pride.
In Harrisonburg Virginia at the bride's parents home at 9 this morning Dr. Marvin Dinges Switzer, a prominent young dentist, and Miss Maury Virginia Winkley wed. Rev. Troward Wells officiated. The bride wore white crepe meteor and georgette crepe, carried pink and white roses, and was driven by cousin Hunter Scriven. After a wedding breakfast they departed for Rawley Springs for a honeymoon and will reside at 245 Newman Avenue, Harrisonburg.
United States Senator Thomas S Martin, once a cadet at Virginia Military Institute during the Civil War era, earned a master of arts degree at the institution during last week's commencement exercises.
Washington June 21 Senate finance committee increased the war revenue bill yield by more than 100.9 million dollars. The committee voted to make individuals liable for the excess profits tax and approved a 6 percent exemption on capital stock plus 5000 dollars for concerns formed since the war began.

In Tomsk province western Siberia martial law is declared amid revolutionary unrest. Over 200 killed and robberies rise as authorities report more than two million arrests. A female regiment led by Vera Ruitcharkefft, aged 18 to 25, will join the Minsk front in two weeks, wearing standard uniforms and armed with modern gear.

Administration leaders say sentiment is forming to pass the food control bill within weeks amid debates in both houses and planned amendments for Senate next week.
In New York June 211- Joseph Hartigan commissioner of weights and measures says every cold storage in the city is full and retailers keep high prices despite ample food. He notes British government has ceased buying and storage space is premium. Wholesalers claim prices are exorbitant and butter cheese and epes have entered New York markets causing a glut. He warns federal and municipal action is needed to halt further increases and curb speculation.
