Supreme Court allows juveniles to be tried without juries

The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that juveniles accused of crime may be tried without juries. Justice Blackmun wrote that most states already practice this and that juvenile protections differ from adult jury rights. The decision preserves state leeway while ensuring fundamental fairness.

Clarke Inaugurates Free Kindergarten in Clarke County

Clarke County School Board starts two pilot kindergarten classes for economically disadvantaged children. One class at Boyce Elementary and one at Berryville Primary will run full day with about 20 pupils each. Applications accepted July 9 1 to 5 pm and July 10 9 am to noon at the two schools.

Clarke County Girl Is 6th Traffic Fatality

Clarke County girl Wilma Lee Carroll 15 of Bluemont died last night after running into Rt. 50 while retrieving a ball. The Banks station wagon driver Theodore Banks of Millwood was eastbound near Buffalo Lick Run when the accident occurred. A passenger, Theodore Banks Jr. 10, was treated and released. Carroll was a Clarke County High School ninth grader and Mt. Carmel Methodist Church member. Funeral services are planned at Mt. Carmel with burial at the church yard.

North Vietnam Attacks Persist Amid B52 Bombing Campaign

North Vietnamese regulars mounted five attacks on South Vietnamese frontier defenses despite a week of heavy B52 raids. US and South Vietnamese forces reported multiple shellings, ambushes, and ground assaults near the DMZ and Da Nang area, with casualties on both sides including several Americans and dozens of North Vietnamese killed. The U.S. command intensified air strikes, logging 90 missions and 2,700 tons of bombs in the week, while battlefield reports cited attacks on Camp Fuller, Firebase Sarge, and other positions along the DMZ and A Shau valley.
