Allied Airlift to West Berlin a Cold War Victory
A 1948 49 airlift to West Berlin, led by Gen. Curtis LeMay and Gen. Lucius Clay, defied Soviet blockade. American planes carried coal and supplies, reinforcing West Berlin for a year and guiding postwar Western alignment. The effort involved 60,000 people, 2.35 million tons moved, and 75 lives lost, with US planes supplying over 70 percent of tonnage.
