In Farmville Virginia 76 year old Dr N P Miller was named the first Black member of the Prince Edward County school board to fill the term of C H Godwin Jr. Miller will represent Farmville District as the board continues to seek greater Black representation amid a county that closed public schools for five years to avoid integration. Also named was Kenneth B Worthy 45 an engineer for Stackpole Components Corp to replace Ray A Moore Jr in Hampden District. Miller expressed hope for the best schools and progress under new superintendent Ronald Perry.
Lt Gov Fred Pollard outlining care and rehabilitation measures urged state support for local community health centers and training programs for mental health professionals. He spoke in Lynchburg while rivals in the Democratic ticket pressed campaigns across the state advocating spending reform and stricter crime laws.
