The Winchester School Board votes to extend the ungraded instruction at Quarles Elementary through fourth grade for another year. Reports on first grade effectiveness lead to adoption of new progress reports for all elementary and high school students.

An American woman tourist Shirley Anderson age 25 from New York City was killed by Iraqi artillery fire on the Israeli Jordan border while with a friend Eileen Bonnet 27 of Lodi California who was wounded and treated in Jerusalem Hospital. The two mission teachers returning from Congo had arrived at Kalia near the Dead Sea when shells began falling lasting about 30 minutes. Israeli forces said the fire came from the Jordanian side and a Jordanian army spokesman reported Israeli and Jordanian artillery duel with two Israeli armored vehicles destroyed.
The USS Command announced 20 Army Reserve and National Guard units totaling about 2,000 soldiers will return to the United States by August 31. They are among 25,000 American troops to be withdrawn from the war zone, with redeployment planned for Army Marine and Navy units totaling about 23,700 servicemen. Sources say more small units will be named to reach the 25,000 target set by President Nixon after his June 8 Midway Island talks with South Vietnamese President Thieu.
BERRYVILLE The Clarke County School Trustee Electoral Board named Wade Blankenship and Charles Grubbs to fill two vacancies on the County School Board. They meet at the Clarke County Courthouse to select successors to retiring members Julian Everly and William T. Chafin.

A Cessna 150 crashed near the Front Royal Municipal Airport around 6:45 p.m. injuring two aboard. Pilot Glenn Eastham and airport manager Scotty McCray were treated and released from Warren County Memorial Hospital. Engine failure forced a corn field crash within a mile of the airport, the plane skidding 100 feet and flipping without fire. Authorities estimate total loss of the aircraft.
