Diamonds and Hardness in Crystalline Structure
Diamonds are praised for extreme hardness but can break under moderate impact due to brittleness. The extraordinary resistance to scratching does not prevent cleavage along specific crystallographic planes, making them susceptible to fracture when struck with sufficient force.
Diamond's surface abrasion resistance described
The text explains that resistance refers to surface wear rather than overall strength or toughness, noting that diamond is the hardest substance and only another diamond can scratch it.
