Three American Attaches Expelled From Russia

Russia expelled three American attaches from the Moscow embassy as persona non grata for alleged improper activities. The officials named Lt. Col. John S. Benson Capt. William R. Stroud and Capt. Walter Mule, all assistant attaches, with no word on their departure. Earlier expulsions included Lt. Col. H. Feldlin Maj. W. McKinney and two other Soviet figures after espionage charges.

Rouss Wins First At Wardensville Parade

The Rouss Drum and Bugle Corps took first in Wardensville parade held by Capon Valley Fire Company during its annual carnival. They earned a $65 prize for best appearing corps. Second went to Stephens City. other winners include Woodstock for best appearing fire apparatus and Capon Bridge High School for best band. Cecil Adams and Arthur W. Mumpower judged the event.

Merger Planned Between Lynchburg Banks

Two of Lynchburg's largest banks, First National Bank and Lynchburg Trust and Savings, plan to merge their operations pending stockholders and OCC approval. Moose Yard Party at Jones Parking Lot on E Clifford Street features games and a City Band concert tonight with a rain date Saturday June 18.

President Eisenhower closed Operation Alert 1955 the three day civil defense drill urging daily prayer to avert a real atomic holocaust. Officials praised farm and industry resilience enough to sustain war effort as 24 cities saved 442 million people while 24 million were homeless in simulations. Casualty estimates reached 8.2 million dead and 6.55 million injured as 15,000 evacuees worked under martial law in 31 posts.

Airlift Provided for Passengers Stranded by Seamen's Strike

Cunard officials chartered planes to move over 1,100 American bound travelers stranded in Britain as a seamen's wildcat strike shuts eight transatlantic liners. About 200 of 1,175 travelers from Britain already were en route on regular flights. 12 more aircraft were added to carry the rest. Fare for the Queen Mary travelers and charter flights ranges around 154 to 168 dollars. Juveniles Nabbed In Hubcap Theft and Vandalism

Several juveniles aged 11 to 15 were cited for breaking car windows and stealing hubcaps at the Southern Scrap Co. and PA Railroad yards. Damage was estimated at 88 dollars and 22 cents.
