An engineers strike shut down the Long Island Railroad stranding about 150 000 commuters. About 360 engineers and motormen were involved in a dispute over operating rules seniority and freight versus passenger duties. A federal mediator was to meet with company and union leaders.
A large black bear that has killed calves roams Botetourt and Rockbridge County hills near Eagle Rock, eluding a 25 member hunting party. The animal attacked a purebred Angus calf owned by George E. Honts Jr. and wounded another cow, then headed toward Rockbridge after escaping efforts. State Game Warden Lewis E. Stine suspects the bear has been active in the area.
Joseph A. Massie, Commonwealth Attorney for Frederick County, was elected president of the Virginia State Exchange Clubs at the Old Point Comfort convention. The gathering also chose Herbert Spain as vice president, Rawson Houchins as treasurer, Don R. Lewis as secretary, and named six board members. Natural Bridge will host next year’s convention. Winchester delegates included J. Fred Larrick and Eugene A. Kight with Mrs. Kight and the McNallys.
The 300000 member Communications Workers of America begins a five day Cleveland convention. The major action is the creation of a multimillion dollar strike fund to support members during labor disputes.
R W Bakers New Esso Servicenter advertises free parking and free rest room service for Kiwanis Carnival visitors at the carnival grounds opposite Valley Ave extended. Also Mt Pleasant E U B Church in Gerrardstown West Virginia announces a yard party on Friday June 20 with service starting at 4 PM.
Seven Swedish airmen aboard an unarmed Catalina were shot at by two MiG 15 jets about 60 miles from the Estonian coast. The crew were rescued by a German merchant ship and landed at Hangoe near Finland. Sweden summoned the Soviet ambassador and demanded an investigation and halt to espionage.
The Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association outlines its 50th Anniversary Convention set for August 21 to 23. Activities include sessions at Sarah Zane Fire Hall, an August 21 welcome by Mayor Clowe, a noon memorial, talks by experts, a Friday luncheon and a Saturday parade with prizes at 6 pm.
St. Charles Toan announces that the Fifth Naval District has cleared the establishment of an active Electronic Naval Reserve Unit in Winchester after a three year effort. Members will be paid for weekly drills and enrollment is open. A meeting at 7 30 tonight at the Navy Recruiting Office in the Post Office Building will discuss eligibility.
New York World Telegram and Sun notes 19 Scripps-Howard newspapers across the country endorsed General Dwight D. Eisenhower for the Republican nomination. Editors praise Ike as an inspirational leader with broad peace and war experience and administrative capability. They acknowledge Senator Robert A. Taft but favor Ike as best for the hour and electability.
Myron Bray Bickers 57 of 222 Amherst Street owner of Bickers Motor Co died yesterday morning in Winchester Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness. Born May 4 1895 in Barboursville Virginia he was a longtime figure in the automobile business and held memberships in Christ Episcopal Church Piedmont Stella Lodge and Scottish Rite. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9 AM at Christ Episcopal Church with private interment in Madison Virginia. The Bickers Motor Co will be closed until Wednesday morning June 18.

Police suspect guerrilla sabotage amid multiple blasts and widespread fires. Thousands flee as phosphorus smoke and flames spread, with tanks sent to assess further risk.
Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway arrives in Rome amid heavy security. About fifty thousand police and troops patrol the city to guard the government against potential unrest and to deter any repeats of Paris riots. The Communist party condemns the action while authorities move to prevent mass meetings and violence. Two suspects held with explosives and anti Ridgway leaflets are seized as police tighten control.

A 10 year old boy Kenneth Wright Jr of Compton Calif tumbled down a 1500 foot cliff at Lake Arrowhead yesterday. He suffered a concussion cuts and bruises and possible internal injuries but is expected to be all right. He fell while playing atop the cliff with two companions Ralph and Gary Sangster who witnessed the 200 foot drop and long rockslide.
United States officials open a series of talks with Britain and France on Korea Indochina and Germany amid fear of a new Russian drive to split the West. Moscow designates Andrei Gromyko as ambassador to London in a move seen as pressuring the U S British French alliance.
The Defense Ministry said nationalist guerrillas raided a small Communist held island about 175 miles south of Shanghai. They used junks for transport, killing 80 Reds, and withdrew before daybreak Thursday after striking Tuesday night.
