A number of Atlantic Refining storage tanks in Pittsburgh collapsed and exploded trapping firemen in flames. The incident sent ambulances racing to the scene with more than a score of firefighters injured, burned or shocked, to be treated in hospitals.
Fire watchers and crews at the storage yards near the tank were driven from the scene as flaming oil showers drenched bystanders. The big container sagged without warning, and the entire plant erupted into a sea of flame.
Firemen faced intense heat and unstable ground as they battled a blaze at the Atlantic Refining Company plant in Pittsburgh. A general alarm called out all city apparatus after a lightning strike ignited an oil tank, with flames burning fiercely through the night and the fire still uncontrolled in the morning.
In Charlotte North Carolina Rev E F Griffith pastor of a Presbyterian church was removed from his pulpit after a storm of protest provoked by a sermon denouncing women’s participation in politics. The incident followed a recent municipal election in which women in the fashionable district were active.
The Winchester Handley school class of 1923 concluded a week of events with class day and a long class banquet at Rouss Hall. The banquet featured a crimson ramblers decorated table, a toastmistress, toasts from Elizabeth Smith George Barr Alvin Kremer and Mrs. Bond, plus gifts to Mr Duffey Mr Clerk and Miss Saulsbury.
James Bucher an elderly resident near Mountain Falls was convicted in the Frederick County Circuit Court for alleged prohibition violations. The jury imposed 30 days in jail and a $50 fine after testimony supported possession of a still mash and intoxicating liquor on his premises. The case of his son in law Frank Snarr was scheduled for next Saturday.
Strasburg Virginia June 16 The state highway commission reports the new 60 000 bridge and cut off at Fisher s Hill near the Valley pike will open to traffic July 4 barring unforeseen delays. The three quarter mile cut through slate rock features a 7 percent grade and eliminates the area s most dangerous curve. A concrete two span bridge over Tumbling Run completes the project and aims to reduce winter ice and snow risk.
The newest Paramount release The Rustle of Silk comes to the Empire Theatre for eight reels on Monday and Tuesday with regular admission. Also showing Charlie Chaplin on those dates.
The funeral of Fred Lineburg, found dead in a Lamps field after a hunting outing, was held yesterday at St John’s Lutheran Church. Rev H E B Sloop officiated and burial followed in the churchyard. Death attributed to apoplexy. the service drew a large crowd for the area. Beginning Monday June ey, the library will close at 8 o’clock evenings instead of 9.
Clerk C C Brannon announced that Frederick County co partnerships and firms trading under a title must file lists of members and business details. No firm has complied for over a year, with penalties and court action possible. Some Winchester firms have responded, but Frederick county business people seem unaware or disregard the law.
The Empire theater advertises continuous Saturday shows from two to end, with evening screenings at 7 and 9 15. It promotes affordable family seating and notes the discontinuation of The Hope Diamond Mystery Serial for higher quality pictures.
A challenge issued by the Elks is pending a response after the Rotary and Kiwanis game. Exalted Ruler GEO A Dunham of Winchester Lodge 867 states the Kiwanis won and may accept the rematch, urging serious play if accepted.

Rantoul Illinois June 16 The attempted daylight flight of seven army aviators from Selfridge Field Mt Clement Michigan to San Antonio Texas was halted in Illinois by a heavy rain.
Emilio Aguinaldo Jr son of the Philippine leader has graduated from Phillips Andover Academy and will enter the Naval Academy in the fall. Beginning Monday June 18 the library will close at 8 pm through September 1 reducing evening hours. 138 remains unreadable.
The Chanticleer Inn at Corner Piccadilly and Braddock Streets hosts Sunday night service on June 17 from 6 to 10 p m. Breakfast luncheon and chicken and waffle suppers offered with special attention to luncheons and teas. Nancy Lee Coble proprietor.
Richmond June 16 The anti-bond forces in Virginia expect the next Senate to oppose bonds. Twenty districts show anti-bond strength with eighteen definite votes against bonds and eight for bonds, leaving fourteen in doubt. The road-payers association has opened headquarters in Richmond as campaign staffing is organized.
Two playgrounds will open on Monday morning June 18 for city children. One at the Friends meeting house Jet and the other in the Harris addition, operating 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. daily except Sunday. Miss Julia Steere leads girls activities, John S. Brown Jr. directs boys. Additional playgrounds planned on Highland Ave and in the southern town.
Two new circuitous routes issued by the Automobile Club of Maryland connect Frederick to Hagerstown and Hagerstown to Winchester. The Frederick to Hagerstown path runs 26.6 miles via Patrick Street Braddock Heights Middletown Boonsboro South Potomac Street to the square in Hagerstown. The Hagerstown to Winchester route travels through Williamsport Martinsburg Bunker Hill Stephenson and Loudoun Street ending at Piccadilly Street in Winchester.
All members of the Friendship Fire Co. are asked to meet at the engine house Sunday evening at 4 o clock to attend a memorial service. Please bring flowers. G R Haines secretary.
The B and O Railroad runs a special excursion train from Baltimore to Shenandoah Caverns near Mount Jackson. It arrives in Winchester at 11.22 p m and offers a round trip fare of 1.75 dollars. The return from Mount Jackson is at 4.30 p m with dinner served at Cavern Inn.
Ford Motor Company reported two production records this week. The Detroit plant produced 40,346 cars in the week ending Tuesday, up 783 from the May 29 week, and a single day output of 6,787 cars and trucks, surpassing the old 6,781. Tractor output reached 2,698 and the Lincoln factory 174. Ford number 7,777,777 was produced June 8 and shipped to a crank in Los Angeles.
The Winchester Gas and Electric Light Company capital stock, valued at 85 600 dollars, has been acquired by the advisory committee of Winchester subscribers and is held in trust by Lewis F. Cooper and W. A. Ryan. Certificates are deposited at Shenandoah Valley National Bank. The plan enables the Winchester gas project to be owned locally, with over 4 000 shares surrendered for conversion to the new local company.
The Winchester lads faced Harrisonburg yesterday and built leads with Poole and three stellar plays. Garrett, Hooe, Norris, and Purdy figured in key hits and double plays as Harrisonburg fought back, but Poole's two hits and Garrett's defense helped Winchester win in a tight ballgame.
Washington June 14 The Virginia farmer who wants to convert apples into cider or vinegar this summer will face limited enforcement risk from Volstead law officials. New regulations drawn by federal prohibition authorities aim to settle cider and vinegar production rules for farms and commercial producers. Commercial production and sale under permit and bond remains, while home production raises questions due to contradictory wording inviting misinterpretation. Continued on page two.
