Gov. William W. Scranton opens a six state delegate drive for the GOP nomination after a commencement address at Allegany College. He trails Goldwater but cites rising reaction from Republicans as he visits Iowa Kansas Minnesota Missouri and heads to Massachusetts for the GOP convention.
The Mercury reached 92 degrees after a night storm dropped 0.07 inches of rain. The forecast calls for cooler weather tomorrow with a low of 70 tonight, and average readings near normal for the next five days. Warmer temperatures return later in the week. At a south town shopping center, two men opened a red van and handled two gray elephants around 8 a.m. Sunday, startling bystanders.
A mass manhunt in Ephrata Pennsylvania ends after two state troopers are wounded and two other officers are briefly held by three men stopped for speeding. Troopers Robert Malarky and Stanley Sypeck were unhurt and freed as gunfire erupted on the turnpike.
Malaysia and Indonesia agreed on monitored withdrawal of guerrillas from northern Borneo, signaling start of a foreign ministers meeting for a summit involving Sukarno Rahman and Macapagal. Weekend fighting in the disputed area left nine dead and many wounded, with casualty figures unclear.
Senate hopeful Barry Goldwater appears poised to gain 56 Texas delegates on Tuesday and exceed the 655 needed for the Republican nomination with Montana’s 14 more potentially moving his total past the threshold. An AP tally showed Goldwater at 619 with Rockefeller 127 Scranton 113 and other figures and many delegates listed as uncommitted or favorite sons. Scranton's nationwide bid has yielded limited gains as he swirls across the country this week seeking to pry away delegates.
U S Senator Barry Goldwater rented a pink stucco and fieldstone cottage on a 12 acre site near Bluemont in Clarke County. Real estate agent E P Berlin confirmed the rental and said no option details were available. A Washington spokesman said the senator looked at the property as a possible purchase but had no knowledge of any option.
In Saigon US Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge dismissed a Washington rumor that he would resign within 30 days as totally untrue. The White House denied any resignation letter. ABC and CBS reported Lodge denied plans to return to the US before the Republican National Convention.
In Warsaw Wladyslaw Gomulka pledged full Polish support for Soviet Premier Khrushchev's conference plan after denouncing China. He warned that if the Red Chinese did not participate in a world conference of Communist parties they would remove themselves from the international Communist movement.
The Virginia 1964 road toll rose to 406 after 22 deaths over the weekend. Seven died Friday night in one crash, eight Saturday, and seven Sunday. Victims include Elijah Shiflett 82 of Augusta Springs and Jesse Hewitt 56 of Newport News among others.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev left Moscow with his wife Nina for an 18 day Scandinavian swing aimed at promoting a nuclear weapons ban in Denmark Norway Sweden and central Europe. He travels by train to Kaliningrad then by sea to Copenhagen, ending in Sweden on July 4.
