Charles H. Schutte Jr led a group of Winchester men applying to the Currency Controller in Washington to organize a national bank with $750 000 capital. The organizers expect a July decision and opening by January 1 if approved, hoping to add a fourth bank to Winchester after 48 years.
The joint communique from Moscow and East Berlin denounces Western provocation in West Berlin and warns of serious complications in Western Europe. Ulbricht hails the treaty as a step toward a demilitarized West Berlin, while Khrushchev calls the accord highly significant. The 20 year friendship pact aims to formalize cooperation while leaving Berlin’s status unresolved.
Hunting and fishing licenses will be sold Monday at the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Clerk of the Corporation Court offices. The forecast calls for a high of 85 today.
Western sources report a Pathet Lao buildup around Muong Soui in north central Laos as a possible attack nears the neutralist stronghold. Muong Soui sits on a key highway from Plaine des Jarres, with Kong Le’s neutralist forces positioned south of the town.
Twelve people died in Virginia traffic crashes last night. Five perished in Fauquier County when a car carrying four sailors and a pickup truck driver collided after the car swerved and struck the truck. The car’s occupants were Leland Petrosky, Victor O. Briant, Clark Rogers, Jerry Ivey, and the driver James Steele. Additional fatalities occurred in Essex County and other spots, including two drivers in separate Essex crashes and three more in separate incidents.
J Kenneth Robinson opened the Virginia Republican convention as keynoter urging opposition to a policy of coexistence with Democrats. He praised Horace Henderson as the leading party chairman and announced Henderson’s retirement. Awards were given to L R Dovel, Arthur Brinkley Jr, Del Caldwell Butler, and Jon Lindseth for local, district, legislative, and youth work.
A yard party and supper are planned for tonight June 13 at 5 p.m. at Welltown Methodist Church. Community members are invited to attend for a social gathering with casual meals.
Sen. Hubert Humphrey said the House is likely to accept the Senate version of the civil rights bill with no substantive changes. If approved, the measure could go to President Johnson for signature before the Republican convention, or face a conference if the House rejects Senate changes. The Senate aims to finish by midweek, with amendments limited and action accelerated.
Shanholtz Taft, 55, of Raceburg Frederick County, escaped from the Winchester Frederick County jail at 1 20 am. He served as a trusty and faced motor vehicle violation charges. Goldwater holds 574 first ballot votes and nears the 655 needed for nomination as conventions in Connecticut New Mexico Idaho and Virginia pick delegates. Scranton Carlson Rockefeller Lodge Nixon and others trail with uncommitted and pledged counts across states.
A group of 73 Americans including four Black students arrived in Havana defying U.S. travel limits. Ed Lemansky led the delegation, calling the U.S. government the biggest force in history and declaring it must be destroyed. The travelers planned a two month stay with Cuban Communist links aiding expenses.
Washington AP reports Gov. William W. Scranton officially seeks the Republican nomination as he campaigns against Goldwater’s conservatism. Eisenhower supports an open convention while Nixon questions Scranton’s late entry and advisers note a slim delegate path with 92 vs 574 for Goldwater. Scranton tours Hartford and Baltimore amid a wary party.
A south west flow of hot humid air pushed into Virginia today between a cold front in the Ohio valley and a warm front across the state. Brief thunder showers were forecast as the day progressed.
