Virginians voted in a Democratic gubernatorial primary between Andrew Miller and Henry Howell as morning turnout remained light. Rain was blamed in part for the small turnout, with preprimary estimates ranging from 450000 to 600000 votes as the race neared its climactic end.
Voters across the state faced 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. polls as Virginians chose Democratic nominees for governor and other offices. Rouss Precinct in Winchester reported the heaviest turnout while many areas showed very light morning voting. Fairfax counted normal turnout at 5 to 15 percent by midmorning.
Ten Americans jailed in Cuba on drug charges were freed and flown home from Havana to Mexico City and then to their homes. The State Department confirmed six were arrested in 1975 and four earlier this year. names were withheld. Remaining twenty Americans still held in Cuba remain prisoners of record.
South Moluccans from several communities gathered in Assen for the burial of six extremists killed when government forces stormed a train holding 51 hostages. A memorial service was held at the Moluccan Evangelical Church before the bodies were buried in a single plot on the city’s southern outskirts.
Douglas Shelton, the final fugitive from Brushy Mountain State Prison, was recaptured in Anderson County near New River. James Earl Ray remained silent after his capture with cellmate Earl Hill. Authorities say the escape was well planned, with Shelton linked to the makeshift pipe ladder.
Principal Robert Long cites a state education survey and staff input showing marijuana and alcohol as top substances. He notes about 20 students addicted, with roughly half of the 915 students having tried marijuana and a quarter repeating use, while dealers are limited to occasional student transactions outside school.
Winchester City Council holds a public hearing on a 12.9 million dollar budget at 7 30 in the council chamber amid concerns over a tax increase and use of windfall funds. City Auditor Porrero and City Manager Seldon warn windfalls paid this year may require higher taxes or service cuts next year.
