Nevada Voters Reject One Percent Sales Tax Increase
Nevada voters rejected a proposed one per cent sales tax hike slated for schools. With unofficial results, 34,236 opposed and 17,134 in favor, the measure failed by about two to one among 102,282 registered voters representing a turnout of about 16 percent. The tax would have raised an estimated $10 million yearly, funding emergency needs. The 1963 legislature put the package forward after turning down higher gambling taxes.

Valley Area Jail Escape Sudden Apprehension
A 19-year-old man, Olin Dewitt Hess, who escaped Berkeley County Jail after a scuffle with a jailer, was captured in Darkesville by Deputy Sheriff Paul Le Dane. Hess snuck through a maintenance passage, fled the jail, and was sent to the State Penitentiary at Huttonsville. The escape involved sawing bars and arcing a jailhouse door.
