President and congressional party leaders met for an hour and 40 minutes in Washington to discuss the forthcoming oral message on civil rights. The session included President Truman and top lawmakers from both parties.
In Alabama a Black student, Dave Mack McGlathery, enrolls at the University Ex Center under state police protection after Governor Wallace chose against a second doorway stand for segregation. Troopers guard the campus as federal court orders back the enrollment amid tense protests and political maneuvering in Washington and Tuscaloosa.
The article notes the first Twilight Fruit Growers meeting set for 6:30 p.m. at the J. R. Russell Orchard with Extension Service officials. A stray brown and tan female wandered to the home of A. M. Hylpeney nogarene earlier.
A 29 year old state trooper, Trooper Garland M. Miller, was killed and Trooper William F. Fowl Jr. injured in an early morning crash of an unmarked patrol car on Virginia 168 near Camp Peary. Fowl was hospitalized with head cuts and possible internal injuries. Miller’s survivors include his widow, a son David Lewis and a daughter Cynthia Lee. The crash left Virginia’s 1963 highway toll at 389. Further details awaited on which car was driven and the other occupant.
At a closed meeting Senator Richard Russell denounced Kennedy's plan to ban racial discrimination by stores and hotels as an intrusion on private property. He also opposed granting the attorney general power to sue over school desegregation while Southerners plot a slow down against the president's civil rights agenda amid nationwide protests.
Surgeons at the University Medical Center in Jackson Mississippi disclosed a healthy lung transplant into a 5 year old man. The three hour operation was completed Tuesday and doctors said the patient is doing well.
In Winchester Corporation Court Judge Elliott Marshall heard Mrs Frances M Cizek charge that her brother Harry Molden allowed the burial of his second wife mothers in the Mt Hebron Cemetery family plot next to Cizek relatives. Cizek objects to the interment and seeks resolution with heirs. Continued on Page 2 Col 6.
Handley High School’s senior class of 112 received diplomas at a ceremony attended by parents and friends. Notable honors included Turner Trice as salutatorian, the Conrad Hoover Boy's Medal for leadership, scholarship and character, and a tie for a scholarship trophy with Sally Tucker. Mrs Cram Jr and other donors supported awards totaling substantial sums.
In Danville Virginia civil rights leaders vow continued demonstrations to break racial barriers. They describe jailings of two leaders on trespass warrants tied to restaurant sit-ins and plan more sit ins and singing marches through the city.
In Cambridge Maryland police report three buildings set ablaze during the third consecutive night of integration demonstrations. A burning oil pot and a kerosene mop were used in incidents in both Negro and white town sections. A fire destroyed a shed behind Helen Waters home, tied to a school board vote on terms of integration. Police say several white bystanders attacked two white demonstrators as officers contained the scene.
At the Virginia Methodist Conference in Virginia Beach Rev. Whitaker W. Shelton was named associate minister of Braddock Street Methodist Church. Rev. Jacob Mast remains pastor. Rev. W. R. Withers moves from White Post Church. Rev. C. Bentley is assigned to Front Royal with other reassigned pastors not immediately listed.
Berryville postmaster Tousley M. Hooker told the Berryville Clarke County Chamber of Commerce he will retire this year after a 10 year term and long service since 1925. He joined the post office early, became postmaster in 1953, and cites growth in receipts from 8000 to 40000 annually while noting his family and local history.

The Coast Guard announced a report of a British submarine sinking 700 miles east of New York is a false alarm. Captain Kenneth R. Goodwin, head of search and rescue in the First Coast Guard District, presented the determination.
