Court Frees Two Women Convicted Of Killing Husbands
The Supreme Court voided the convictions of Dorothy Krueger Smith in Tokyo and Clarice B. Covert in England, ruling military courts lacked authority to try civilians. Justice Black said civil courts must handle such crimes, reversing a prior ruling that allowed civilian suspects abroad to be tried by military tribunals. Covert awaits retrial. Smith to be released from Alderson Reformatory in a few days.
