A tanker Pinthis and passenger liner Fairfax collided in Massachusetts Bay killing more than 40 aboard and leaving many missing or injured. Flames from the oil spread as the ships burned, the tanker sinking 20 minutes after impact. The Fairfax transferred passengers to the Gloucester as dawn neared.
Official results show six regular Democrats victorious in yesterday’s city council election with unusually small turnout. Ward totals: Hollis 131, Fred W. 126, Peyton Marshall 125. Ward II led by Barr 223 and Glaize 205. Rosenberger 202. Ainson 155. Tomorrow at 10 a.m. officials meet to tally and certify. new council term starts September 1.
Funeral services for Ray Forney who died suddenly of a heart attack were held at his East Boscawen street home with Rev. E. T. Clark and Rev. Dr. L. A. Thomas officiating. The Friendship Fire Company attended in force. Interment was in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers named were Herbert Haines Tilden Snapp George Fisher B S Coffman Harry Woodward and Frank Harry. Relatives from out of town included Mrs. Dora Armentrout and Miss Sallie Feuchtenberger of Harrisonburg Virginia and others from Strasburg Washington Ocean City New Jersey and Westernport Maryland.
The nomination of Hanford MacNider of Iowa as minister to Canada was reported to the Senate without recommendation. Senator Brookhart of Iowa objected, calling the nomination personally offensive.
The Associated Press reports Chicago’s population reached 3,373,753, an increase of 632,048 since 1920. The city’s growth milestone is noted in a June 11 release.
Eight hundred entries are listed for the fortieth Upperville Colt and Horse Show at Grafton Farms near Upperville, with more than $3,000 in prizes. Judges include C. J. Fitzgerald who offers a silver bowl for the yearling filly class.
The District Nurse Association announces another free tuberculosis clinic for next Monday June 16 at their offices near the Court House from 9 30 a m to noon and 2 to 4 p m. Dr C W tt of the State Board of Health will head the clinic with nurse assistants. The service is free and early symptoms of tuberculosis should seek chest examinations. Children under 14 will not be examined without a physician written request. Clinics were previously held on Fridays.
Funeral services for Mrs Molly Evans Janney will be held at 11 oclock tomorrow morning at her home 301 North Loudoun Street with Rev F T McFaden of Loudoun Street Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment follows in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers include Stewart Bell M Lohn Capper R Frank Barr Harold C Sheetz E B Sheeta and William G Hardy.

Officials claim annual savings exceed $80,000 and a net reduction of about 144 staff.
The public is invited to view the advanced class work in manual training from Handley High School in the Solenberger window display. Under James B. Yates, the project marks the first full session of advanced manual training after years of basic shop courses. The display runs through Friday and features numerous excellent pieces by the students.
The Salvation Army in Winchester warns residents that no one is authorized to collect funds locally. Officers urge people to avoid giving to anyone in garb or with a tambourine and advise telegraphing or writing to P. O. Box 177, Winchester, Va.
At the June Festival hosted by Market Street M. E. Church on Friday June 13 from 5 to 10 p.m. The event features homemade ice cream cakes and assorted candies for sale to attendees. Proceeds support church activities.
Handley High School held Senior Class Day with a bronze Lupton Memorial Tablet unveiling for Eunice M Lupton and her husband 8 Lucian Lupton 1856 1920 to fund the Lupton School of Horticulture. A 3:30 p m program featured processions songs history poetry and speeches by seniors.
Berryville Va June 11 Twenty two members of the Berryville High School senior class received diplomas before a capacity audience. A. F. Robertson superintendent gave remarks on knowledge as power. Rev Nelson spoke on The Abundant Life, noting scientific progress and future discoveries.
Four young robbers were sentenced to 20 years each by Judge Robert F. Stanton in Baltimore. The trio caught during the attempted robbery of George F. Ruoff's jewelry shop on May 21, 193? were George Meredith, Alfred Hyatt, and Charles Crmer, with Edwin West linked to a separate hold-up at a lottery parlor two weeks earlier.
New York June 11 The stock market, after a sharp sell off, rallied to recover much of the loss by early afternoon. Shares fell 4 to 10 points before short covering cushioned the decline as trading stayed light and call money reappeared at 3 percent.

Keith Hockman of Front Royal died when his Ford collided head on with a ten ton roller near the Mount Airy road junction on the Valley Pike. R. E. Herr Jr. was injured, rushed to Rockingham Memorial Hospital with concussion, and his condition improved later. The roller, driven by E. B. Estep, was being returned to Shenandoah Caverns.
The Bank of Bay Biscayne with deposits of 15 937 198 and three affiliated banks failed to open this morning due to recent substantial withdrawals. Biscayne Trust, Miami Beach Bank and Trust, and Bank of Coral Gables were also affected. In Cheboygan Michigan a 308 000 shortfall was found at First National Bank after savings teller Clyde Milligan killed himself Monday night. the bank is closed and under a bank examiner.
Three robbers jumped the paymaster of the American Coat and Apron Supply Company in Pittsburgh today, abducted him, and escaped with 2330 dollars. Police suspect the same trio who held up bank messengers of the East End Savings and Trust Company and took 2039 dollars yesterday.
