President Coolidge warns tax cuts depend on holding expenditures
President Coolidge told budget meeting heads that further tax reductions hinge on keeping federal expenditures near current levels. He projected a $599 million surplus for the year ending June 30 and a $238 million surplus next year, but warned that this year's surplus is uncertain due to nonrecurring receipts. He urged holding total appropriations to $3.3 billion for 1929, with nonessential cuts already near their limit.
