The Hill Top House resort hotel near Harpers Ferry West Virginia was destroyed by fire early yesterday. Loss estimated over 50000 dollars. About thirty guests were registered but had risen before the blaze. The fire started in the top story and spread rapidly.
Karl Retter, head of the Austrian peace mission, writes the peace conference complaining of hard conditions that overwhelm Austria. He cites frontier questions and says conditions show despair. The letter will be presented to the council of four tomorrow.

Berkley D Adams of Charlotte County accepts Governor Westmoreland Davis's appointment to the State Corporation Commission to succeed S N Lupton who resigned effective June 1. Adams had been the Democratic nominee for the unexpired term of Colonel Christopher B Garnett and will resign from the Virginia General Assembly to take the new post. Lupton had filled Garnett's vacancy until twenty days after the November general election.
A Russian wireless dispatch from London reports Bolshevik troops captured the city of Usa on Monday after three days of intense combat. The city had recently fallen under Admiral Kolchak’s forces.

The Hygiene Class for Clearbrook cotown and Welltown sections will hold its first meeting at Branson's School House at 3 PM on Thursday, June 12. Miss Mary McFadden will conduct the course, and it is hoped members from each local family will attend to continue through the program.

Former Senator Hiihu Root testified that he showed the peace treaty to Senator Lodge during a Senate foreign relations committee session. He said he got the document from Henry P. Davison of J. P. Morgan and Company, who received it from Thomas W. Lamont, banker and adviser to the American peace mission. Davison claimed he held the treaty only as president of the International Red Cross League. Morgan and Vanderlip denied ever possessing a copy. Root accused President Wilson of constitutional overreach in withholding the treaty from Congress. Ming Idella McCoy left for Philadelphia on a visit.
The case concerns Peter La Berger from Wisconsin challenging a House committee’s authority to deprive a member of his seat. Chairman Gallinger opened the hearing noting the committee would review the case from the start and permit defense evidence previously excluded in federal court where Berger was convicted under the espionage act and sentenced to twenty years.
