President Kennedy urged a peaceful civil rights revolution as he spoke to national mayors in a five state tour. Mayors Wagner Daley Cavanagh Barr pledged to push a six point program to advance equality in housing employment and public services.
A low pressure area moving southward is expected to push Virginia's warm air out of the state tomorrow bringing clouds after a sticky low around 74. The forecast hints at cooler, more comfortable conditions following the unsettled spell.
Governor Wallace vows to stand for the people at the University of Alabama as two Negro students face entry challenges. He will confer with trustees who approved admitting the students while planning to use federal action if needed. The showdown follows a weekend in New York and a statewide radio broadcast.
Winchester pupils attend annual cemetery service to honor John Ley John Kerr and others then receive report cards and dismiss. Handley seniors heard Dr Frank R Hamilton preach Kingdom Within at Christian Temple United Church of Christ Norfolk. Handley Glee Club participated in program.
Danville saw a protest march in downtown blocked by police as fire hoses dispersed about 100 demonstrators defying a court injunction. Rev A J Dunlap and two others, free on $5 000 bonds, were among leaders charged with inciting to riot, with arrests made on City Hall steps as traffic resumed.
J Henkel Henry 82 civic leader and former Winchester city councilman died Saturday night at Winchester Memorial Hospital. Born February 12 1881 he was the last of ten children and a descendant of Patrick Henry. He served on the City Council from 1918 to 1946 and was longtime Democratic Executive Committee member.
A group of about 12 Frederick County Supervisors and residents gathered to oppose a 500000-volt Vepco transmission line proposed to cross roughly 18 counties in Virginia. Petition with 128 signatures cited property value, agricultural, and safety concerns. Critics warned of decreased land values and nuisance while noting limited tax benefits to the county. Carroll M. Sisk 37 of Front Royal died when his tractor-trailer from Triangle Express struck a bridge on Rt. 522 eight miles east of Sperryville. Lights reportedly failed before impact. truckage carried 500 to 1 000 cases. He is survived by wife and three children. Burial at Guest Funeral Home Culpeper. Funeral arrangements made.
Prime Minister Macmillan ordered a Lord Dilhorne led inquiry into security aspects of the Profumo affair and possible breaches or negligence. The probe may be completed this week and its findings given to Macmillan and Harold Wilson, with public release uncertain. Meanwhile Stephen Ward faced a magistrate on prostitution charges, held without bail, as Scotland Yard warned of further charges and potential witness interference.
A weekend of deadly crashes in Virginia claimed ten lives. Among the dead were S W Kendrick 51 of Cedar Grove North Carolina and Thomas A Kendrick 27 Capron along Virginia 651 near Courtland in Southampton County. Other victims included Carroll M Sisk ?, Joseph Francis Jaraez Jr 20 Marine at Camp Lejeune Ontario, Jean Williams 22 of Chesterfield in a Greyhound collision, and Amita Claude Harris 20 of Ashland.
Washington Gas Light Co seeks to form Hampshire Gas Co to acquire oil and gas leases on about 37 000 acres in Hampshire County West Virginia with a 2 000 acre gas field. Officials estimate reserves at about 7 5 billion cubic feet and plan initial deliveries to Shenandoah Gas Co while pursuing underground storage potential near Prince Georges.
President Kennedy announced that he Khrushchev and Macmillan will send negotiators to a Moscow conference in mid July to pursue a binding nuclear test ban. He said the U S will not be first to resume tests, urging a formal treaty while stressing broader peace and freedom at home.
West Virginia's revised Sunday-closing law took effect with little effect. Merchants mostly kept doors open, and no raids or arrests were reported. Northern Panhandle police warned several businessmen they could be in violation, while major towns like Huntington Beckley Bluefield and Parkerburg saw no disruptions.
