Gov Harry Flood Byrd spoke to a large audience in the Colonial Theatre praising proposed Virginia constitutional amendments to be voted on June 19. Judge Philip Williams introduced Byrd as Handley High School Cadet Band performed from the theatre balcony and the Colonial Theatre donated space by manager Mr Boucher. Byrd said amendments reduce future political motive and would modernize state government, stressing public approval, with Williams noting the people would decide which amendments pass.

The Handley High School baccalaureate will be at 8 pm in the school auditorium with Rev. Dr. Henry Ignatius Smith of the Catholic University as speaker. Hosted by the Winchester Ministerial Association, the public is invited to attend the service featuring hymns, anthems by the Handley Glee Club, scripture readings, prayers, and a sermon.
Prizes will be awarded at the 9 o'clock show at the Colonial Theatre tonight for the essay on What the Empire Theatre has meant to the people of Winchester and Myself from an Entertaining and Educational Standpoint. Shenandoah Valley Academy held a final ball in the academy gym last night with about 200 graduates, relatives, and friends. The decorated ballroom, music by a Washington, D C orchestra led by Joe Verzi, and an all night dancing schedule capped the 1928 commencement week. Dr McFaden addressed graduates at Handley Library, with medals and certificates awarded to numerous students including Clyde Gurley, William McGuire, John Rice, Randolph Shields, Nathaniel Hildreth, Andrew Rawn, Peter Vredenburgh III, Lewis Hewlett, Frank Bailey, Haskell Davis, Edson Raff, John Crown, Sam Cowin, Francis England, and Kenneth Sharretts.
Joseph Roszel Hill, a retired farmer from Loudoun County and long-time Winchester resident, died at his home on South Cameron Street. He suffered a stroke after Brights disease and passed away peacefully with family at his bedside. Funeral services are set at 10 a.m. tomorrow at his residence, with burial at Obenezer near Purcellville conducted by several ministers. Pallbearers named. He was born in Apple Pie Ridge, Frederick County, about 88 years ago.
