Winchester City Council unanimously approves a 1.54 million budget for 1955 56. Real estate tax rises to 1.50 per 100 and personal property to 2.25 per 100 under new assessments, with major costs for a new elementary school and police facility remodeling.
Stephen Allen Brown Handley valedictorian urged peers to cling to the strong old order as they seek better futures. Eighty four members of the Class of 1955 received diplomas at Handley commencement in Winchester.
Prime Minister Nehru began a morning meeting with Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov during his two week tour of the USSR. Ambassador Menon said they covered nearly all world affairs though specifics were not disclosed. The session delayed Nehru’s schedule and a wreath laying at Lenin and Stalin’s tomb.
Bill Chapman announces a Winchester event lineup with a 1:00 p m city band concert on the courthouse lawn by the Winchester Municipal Band under Galen Strance, a 1:30 p m Loudoun Street parade, and 2:00 p m groundbreaking at Winchester Recreation Park for the War Memorial, plus free bus service from McCrorys at 1:00 and 2:00 p m to the park.

Wildcat strikes idled Fisher GM and Ford plants nationwide, as Ford reached a three year contract with the UAW while GM prepared a fresh offer. totals showed 52,000 workers idle at various plants, with 38,894 at GM and 13,250 at Ford across multiple sites.
Nearly an inch of rain fell in the past 24 hours with .94 inches recorded by the Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory. June total stands at .95 inches with a yearly total of 12.55 inches. Berryville town council unanimously elected Frank M. Galloway to fill the unexpired term of Councilman Ernest Locke who died May 22. Galloway, a Clarke County native and former Armour engineer, will serve Ward 3 until August 31, 1956. He built a home in Berryville after returning from South America in 1951.
Bethlehem Steel Corp and the CIO United Steelworkers opened negotiations in Pittsburgh over a substantial wage increase. David J. McDonald led the union team, while Joseph M. Larkin headed Bethlehem's negotiators. The union plans to present its demand to Republic Steel later, with more firms to follow.
Stephens City mayor and council accept the resignation of council member Ritenour, proprietor of the Stephens City Garage, at the June meeting. A committee will seek a successor for the unexpired term, to be elected by council at the July meeting or a special session. The budget of 14134 for the new fiscal year was adopted after a public hearing, and the streets committee was asked to trim high weeds at several intersections.
President Eisenhower expressed confidence that West Germany's Chancellor Adenauer will stand with the Western world in dealings with the Soviet Union. Moscow invited Adenauer to visit to discuss relations as Western Europe shifts. Adenauer's decision remains solely his.
