Governor and state dignitaries will honor Mathew Fontaine Maury on June 9 in Goshen at a memorial tablet unveiling. The monument features a rough-hewn granite boulder with a bronze medallion and a tablet, the latter crafted by an artist.
The event centers on a monument planned near Natural Bridge with a 2000 pound anchor and chain from the Virginia Pilots Association. Notables including Dr. C Alphonso Smith and Governor Frinkle will attend, with remarks by the National Geographic Society and others. The unveiling venue lies between Natural Bridge and Hot Springs, amid Goshen Pass scenery.
