Spencer Griffin, 55, stood before a judge in Portland for sentencing on his fifth felony conviction, armed robbery. The judge asked if Griffin preferred life in prison or 25 years. Griffin replied he would choose life, to stay out of trouble, and he received his wish.
President Nixon invited ten young people to his Newport Beach villa to discuss the military draft and Selective Service advisory panels. The group includes eight men and two women from Oklahoma Iowa Michigan Mississippi and New York City, with roles ranging from college students to apprentices. Also present were HEW Secretary Robert H. Fin ch and aide Bryce Harlow plus Henry Kissinger who travelled to California to help prep for the Midway Island summit with South Vietnam. Nixon announced Donald E. Johnson of West Branch Iowa as veterans administrator and to head a committee reviewing federal benefits for returning Vietnam veterans.
David Lee Delph 24 was found guilty of robbery in Frederick County Circuit Court. The jury set a 20 year sentence in the penitentiary. Delph was also sentenced to eight years on an attempted murder conviction from the same incident. Arch ie Miracle, his accomplice, had pleaded guilty in 1966 and received 20 years on each indictment with concurrent runs.
Dry air prevails across Virginia bringing generally fair weather. No precipitation expected as high pressure maintains sunny to partly cloudy conditions statewide.
