Davis Proposes 20 Regional Jails for Virginia

Virginia Corrections Director Jack F. Davis unveils a $60 million plan for a network of 20 regional jails to relieve crowding in state prisons and local facilities. He says the state would fund about 75 percent, with localities covering the rest, a project likely 10 to 15 years away and dependent on General Assembly backing. Most jails would be in large population areas, with 10 of 91 local jails unaffected.

Jefferson Exhibit Opens With Fireworks Display

Washington AP report describes the Jefferson bicentennial exhibit opening with a fireworks show on the National Mall attended by First Lady Betty Ford and thousands. The National Gallery of Art staged the event, inspired by 18th century France, with Capitol dome lights dimmed and a compact, aerial firework display. J. Carter Brown and W. Howard Adams guided Mrs. Ford through the exhibit “The Eye of Thomas Jefferson,” which features 600 items from about 150 sources. The same Ruggieri Brothers firm that supplied French fireworks in Paris produced the night’s display.
