Music and Mountains of the Southern Appalachians
The article recalls how the hills and hollows of the Southern Appalachians preserved Old World folk songs through oral tradition. Folklorist Dr. Patrick Gainer notes the decline of old ballads as radio and TV spread, with examples like A Few More Months. It traces Shenandoah Valley print music from 1800s printers and figures such as Ambrose Henkel, Wartmann, Funk, and the Ruebush Kieffer firm, highlighting mountaineer and valley singing traditions now fading.
