London reports Britain watches Italy amid northern France battles. Germany presses with air and sea attacks as survivors return, including two vessels at Dover and Paris with casualties noted. a 17 year old boy killed aboard one ship.
Berlin reports German aerial strikes on the capital airdrome and other military targets in the center of the area city. Nazis claim large British and French casualties in bloody Flanders as two hospital ships are attacked.
Washington reports a push to raise defense taxes to 750 million to 1 billion annually, with the Ways and Means Committee already setting 656 million. Senators Brown Pepper and Vandenberg urged swift action while a naval expansion bill moves toward quick passage and a public works labor shift aids defense.
Paris reports German land sea and air forces renewed savage attacks on Dunkerque today. Military spokesman says evacuation of the remaining Allied forces there is increasingly difficult. The land front in France remains quiet with only localized activity and no change of position.
New York June 3 Joseph Schenck president and board chairman of Century Fox Film Corp was indicted by a federal grand jury on 24 counts of income tax fraud conspiracy and making false statements. Bookkeeper Joseph H Moscowitz named codefendant. Indictment says Schenck defrauded the government of over 400000 in 1935 7.
About 1500 attendees filled Handley High School auditorium to hear Dr A W Palmer president of the Chicago Theological Seminary discuss the Fine Art of Living as the baccalaureate sermon for 105 diploma candidates. Palmer arrived from Washington DC with Dr Howard Stone Anderson after a Columbus OH flight and spoke at the University of Ohio yesterday morning.
A Frederick County grand jury in Frederick Circuit Court returned several true bills. Foreman Phil Gold and jurors P. E. Lineburg E. Dean Adams W. R. Berryhill Bryan Constable E. C. Brumback and Allen Bond were named. Charges include arson at Stephens City and various burglary counts tied to Lemley’s pool room and restaurant. William E. Henrietta is accused in a related December 27, 1939 incident.
Paul J. Tross a 41 year old Keyser Negro pleaded guilty today before Justice C C Compton to assaulting a white woman school teacher in her apartment yesterday while her mother was away. He was remanded to jail without bond awaiting action of a special grand jury. Authorities withheld details fearing mob violence.
William Mauck of Corriganville Maryland is treated at Memorial hospital after a motorcycle he rode went out of control near Capone. Doctors report no broken bones but scalp injuries and shock. He is believed enrolled in a CCC camp.
Winchester and Frederick county Red Cross officials report hitting a $2000 war relief quota and begin planning to raise an additional $2000. National chairman Norman Davis says the national quota has doubled to about $20,000,000, with all chapters urged to participate.
Washington reports Barlow from Baltimore will conduct another test of his liquid oxygen and carbon explosive. The Bureau of Standards will supervise a demonstration near Washington on Friday or early next week to compare demolition power with TNT. A prior test at Aberdeen claimed stronger power than TNT.
The condition of Miss Rebecca Tavenner, 20, daughter of Trial Justice and Mrs. A. J. Tavenner, was reported serious this afternoon by her father Judge Tavenner. He said she has been a patient at Memorial hospital since Saturday and recovery is doubtful. She had been in ill health for some time.
San Francisco June 3 volunteers for war and ambulance driving overseas face denials at Siam Red Cross headquarters. A few claim they have nerve and skill but officials note only six American Red Cross nurses or ambulance drivers are sent overseas from the U.S. The organization ships aid instead, including 150 ambulances on the McKeesport and supplies for refugees.
Thomas Edward Kremer 69 prominent Winchester grocer and former Common Council member died at his home 206 South Cameron Street at 11 last night after a short illness. He owned part of Kremer & Brother, longtime grocers at 10 South Loudoun, and served on the Handley School Board since 1932. He was a director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank and other local concerns. Funeral Wednesday at 3 from Market Street Methodist Church with interment in Mount Hebron. pallbearers to be announced.

Amateur pilot Paul Rhodes departed Winchester at 11 30 for Baltimore Maryland to obtain serum for Dr Herman Pifer for a patient ill of tularemia. Rhodes had not returned by 2 30 but was expected soon.
Kermit Batt and A C Randolph Jr sustained injuries in a Memorial Hospital. The Taylor Cub plane crashed during a routine check flight after an adverse air current at takeoff. Randolph said he regained control as the craft spun and descended about 150 feet.
Shenandoah Valley wool growers plan a June 7 meeting in Harrisonburg Virginia to set wool prices. Bids will be received and decided that day. Frederick County producers reportedly hold back output seeking higher prices. Wool yield this year in Frederick described as fair.

Bushrod T. Gore aged 93 died at 4 45 pm Sunday at his Clearbrook home from infirmities of old age. Born January 18 1847 in Loudoun county he lived much of his life in Frederick county farming. He leaves six sons nine daughters 32 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 30 pm from the Clearbrook home conducted by Rev. Moore with burial at Mount Hebron Cemetery.

The Shawnee district Frederick County Council of Religious Education announces the Sunday schools convention will be held Wednesday June 5 at Union Chapel Opequon not Thursday as previously printed. The committee in charge notes that all Sunday Schools in the district are invited to attend with a noon session and an evening program to follow.
