Dr. Jonas Salk said there will be an awful lot of polio cases this summer, but paralytic polio rates should be lower. He distinguished polio from paralytic polio and urged local health officials to decide about inoculations.
Ground breaking exercises for the Opequon Memorial Presbyterian Church educational building at Kernstown will be Sunday at 5 PM followed by a church grounds picnic. Bowerman Brothers of Berryville will build, with a committee led by Roy W. Bayliss Jr. approving funds and scope.
Hodgson and Brown at 41 W Boscawen St call for used watches in any condition as a trade in toward a new timepiece. A local ad urges quick action for customers looking to upgrade devices.
The governing board reaffirmed it will operate no public schools unless racial segregation is kept separate. After a two hour session the group adopted a lean budget to cover operating costs and spent most of the time on minor matters. Chairman Edwn A. Carter issued a brief statement as cameras rolled.

County officials defend segregation in Prince Edward County citing state rights and a high quality Negro high school. Board refuses to say if public schools will operate next year while stressing they will pursue legal measures to maintain separate, high standard education for both races.

Handley High School senior class of 84, 49 girls and 35 boys, were luncheon guests of the Winchester Rotary Club. Superintendent Garland R. Quarles spoke on birth trends and class statistics, naming sponsors and officers and noting 42 percent plan to attend college. Next year’s class expected at 75 to 80, with 135 to 140 for 1957.
The Richmond News Leader urges Virginia to seek lawful means to sidestep the Supreme Court’s desegregation ruling. The editorial denounces the Court’s May 1954 decision, calling the justices to repudiate the Constitution and insisting the South will not conciliate promptly or at all.
Mrs. Winfred W. L. Bacon, 64, was found dead on a beach near her summer cottage in Toms River New Jersey. State police said her two Doberman pinschers, a male and a female, turned on her and killed her as they roamed around the body.

In Belgrade Tito and Khrushchev finalized a declaration summarizing seven days of talks aimed at repairing the Soviet Yugoslav rift. The leaders toured Yugoslavia’s farm lands and factories with Khrushchev praising certain aspects while noting shipbuilding concerns. A joint Soviet Yugoslav declaration was anticipated at the conclusion.
