The Senate unanimously passed a bill to raise average postal worker salaries by 8 percent for 500000 employees after securing President Eisenhower's assent. The measure, replacing a vetoed draft, seeks House passage with a Senate post office and civil service committee review tomorrow.
A television set at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Jones 518 North Kent Street was damaged beyond repair by a fire caused by a suspected short circuit. Firefighters removed the blazing set, limited damage to a small rug, and extinguished the blaze. no other property was seriously harmed. A neighbor alerted the department.无
The Associated Press reports light snow and cool conditions in parts of the West while much of the country enjoys pleasant June weather. Thunderstorms with hail and gusty winds hit central and northern plains as storms move southeast from the Central Plateau and central Rockies. Rain and snow spread across Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, and Nevada with the Northeast recording showers including over an inch in Burlington Vermont.
Fran Jo Duckwall the 18 year old son of Rev and Mrs J S Duckwall of 15 Peyton Street in Winchester will receive the $350 Star Leadership Award at graduation exercises June 7. The award honors leadership character and duty among high school seniors. Duckwall plans to study medicine at Hampden Sydney College after graduation and aims for general practice.
Detroit Ford union and Ford Motor Co extend the contract to next Monday morning to allow further negotiations. Walter Ken Bannon and Walter Reuther say Ford has new proposals but big gaps remain on key issues including guaranteed annual wage. Extension postpones a strike and could hint at wage and worker security terms for the industry.

Prince Edward County supervisors reject the school operating budget for the next year while approving about 150000 for maintenance of school properties. The action follows the Supreme Court ruling on Virginia segregation, filed in 1951 by about 100 Negro students challenging the law.

The CIO Textile Workers Union announced a new contract for American Viscose Corp. covering 11 000 workers at seven plants with a 5 cent hourly raise. Additional raises total 3 cents for 1300 skilled maintenance workers and 2 to 8 cents for smaller groups. Average prior pay was 1.73 an hour. The contract includes about 15 other adjustments including more liberal severance pay and is retroactive to May 1, 1956. Voting covered Meadville Lewistown Marcus Hook Parkersburg Nitro Front Royal and Roanoke. The two year pact can be reopened for wage talks after June 1 1956. The old contract had expired November 30 with two extensions issued.
Absecon New Jersey A four year round home heating cooling system powered by a reactor about twice the size of a car battery was proposed by Robert E Ferry at the Institute of Boiler and Radiator Manufacturers annual meeting. The A boiler would fit in a garage or basement and provide six years of heat and cooling for about 300 dollars per sealed fuel unit with a replacement cost similar.
The Winchester Jaycees announce eight judges for the Junior Chamber of Commerce teen-age Road-E-O at the Smith Transfer lot on Valley Ave Saturday. Five on the Skill test course and three on the written quiz include Gordon Hawks and L H Stotler of Novic Transfer Winchester. Paul Stotler safety director. William Fitz-Hugh of Smith Transfer Staunton. David Donovan of Battletown Transfer Berryville. Michael E Doyle Liberty Mutual Washington. and two Virginia State Troopers from Winchester.
