Veterans rally to march on Washington with feed and transport concerns mounting. Readies groups form from Oregon to New York as thousands plan to converge, starting across Texas Oklahoma and the Carolinas toward the capital.
Six truckloads of former service members traveled through Winchester yesterday heading to Washington to press Congress for immediate bonus payments. Local ex veterans plan to join a parade on Wednesday June 8 with free transport and meals for those lacking funds.
Virginia Barrel Company reported overnight burglary at its plant. Police Chief C W Hollis suspects a gang of burglars. Stolen items include a breast drill a hack saw two screwdrivers and a pair of pliers. Entry was gained via a window and no other damage noted. Police conduct check on possessor of such tools.
Funeral services for George Hite of Keyser WV were conducted at the Southern Methodist Church where he served on the official board. Rev H S Coffey officiated with interment in Woodstock cemetery. Hite was about 70 and a lineal descendant of a pioneer Valley of Virginia family.
Madison Lodge No. 6 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows will hold memorial services at Mount Hebron Cemetery at 3 p.m. Sunday June 5. Lodge members meet at 2:30 p.m. and Rebekah Assembly members join at the same time. Flowers are requested for graves. Rev. E. A. Lambert of Braddock Street Oakage Episcopal Church South will deliver the main address.
Representative Hawley of Oregon introduced two bills to implement the administration relief program. The measures reflect the President’s recent speech and propose $300,000,000 in relief loans to states and an additional $1,500,000 borrowing power for the Reconstruction Corporation to fund self liquidating projects.
Washington June 2 Senator Norris a Republican from Nebraska prepared as a substitute for a flat 10 percent cut in all civilian government salaries. The proposal would exempt those earning below 1500 dollars and apply reductions from five to twenty five percent on salaries above that figure.
Two men died and another was seriously burned when a Frisco passenger train collided with a gasoline truck at a crossing in Lowell Arkansas early today. The truck exploded after impact. Fireman J. W. Thomas of Fort Smith and Cecil Allen aged 22, truck driver, died instantly. A fragment mentions a new showing of gift articles and summer merchandise at Mol ing Cather's.
The Sarah Zane Fire Company announces a regular meeting on Friday night at 8 o clock. Captain Richard B Brown will preside. Members are urged to attend.

Market Street M. E. Church hosts a sale of homemade ice cream cakes and candy on Thursday June 2 from 5 to 10 PM. Proceeds support church programs and community outreach.
Mrs. Ella Burtner Turner, wife of Dr. John R. Turner president of the University of West Virginia, was badly hurt when a Packard sedan crashed into a telephone pole eight miles west of Morgantown after a bee sting between her eyes. She suffered nervous shock, a fractured right wrist, a sprained left wrist, and facial lacerations and was taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital for observation.
The Rev. E. D. Witherspoon departs from Highlands Avenue Presbyterian Church after two years of service. He heads to Blacksburg to shepherd a large Presbytery of Montgomery church with strong ties to Virginia Tech and about 500 worshipers.
Miss Emily Light daughter of Mr and Mrs H C Light of the Clearbrook neighborhood underwent an emergency operation last evening at Winchester Memorial Hospital for an acute appendix attack. She is employed in the office of attorney Harry K Benham and was taken ill while working. She was moved to Dr B B Duttons office where an immediate operation was performed and she is reported doing satisfactorily.
The James W. Good property at 432 Highland Avenue will be sold in front of the Court House at noon on Saturday June 4. Sale bills provide details.
The Tribune Fresh Air Committee at Handley Library reports eight members and steady progress. The bulletin highlights cases of need with families in poverty, hunger, and lack of clothing, urging greater town spirit and charitable action. The committee meets again Monday at 8 PM.
Frederick County officers intensified efforts to locate Frances Nicholson Orndorff, missing since December 29. Husband Kermit Orndorff remains jailed in Shenandoah County on murder charges while investigators pursue a wave of new clues from Star Tannery and surrounding areas.
Chief of Police C. W. Hollis stated officers will strictly enforce the traffic rule requiring motorists to stop before entering streets with stop signs. He noted recent complaints of flagrant violations and said violators will be fined.
A grease fire at Milton Snapp’s National Avenue repair shop caused about 1500 dollars in damage yesterday afternoon. Firemen battled a fast spreading blaze after a hot iron ignited floor grease during drilling, gutting much of the workshop.
Persons turning in an alarm of fire are requested to inform fire men the nature of the blaze. In doing so they will save the fire men a great deal of trouble and expense. The apparatus of the Winchester fire department cost about $60,000. It is seldom that more than one fire truck is needed. C. Lee Barr, Chief Fire Warden.

The funeral of Charles J. F. Athey who died of a heart attack last Sunday was held Tuesday afternoon at his Gray Avenue home with a large turnout. The Presbyterian Church members Rev. Dr. F. T. McFaden and Rev. E. D. Witherspoon conducted the service at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers and attendees included many relatives from Washington Baltimore Philadelphia Bolivar and Brunswick among others.
Washington reports a twofold administration critique of Democratic public works relief plans. Secretary Hurley and Secretary Mills urged committees against large outlays, claiming the $500 million package would create too few jobs and risk financial instability. They cited projects totaling $154.34 million would employ about 63,442 men.
