United States District Attorney Richard Evelyn Byrd suffered a serious attic blaze at his Amherst street home shortly before 10:30 this morning. The fire, caused by an overheated uninsulated water heater vent pipe, heavily damaged the attic but was checked by prompt firemen who cut through slate and roof to reach the flames. Chemical agents aided suppression as crews battled the stubborn fire and kept the rest of the house from total loss.
