Thinning of Fruit Urged On Growers
Virginia horticulturist L. W. Moore urges hand thinning of peaches and apples after the June drop to reduce culls and improve fruit quality. He notes thinning aids disease and insect control and can boost returns by producing larger, uniformly shaped fruit with less labor in handling and picking. Timing favors early thinning, with apples spaced six to eight inches and peaches four inches, extendable to six or eight on vigorous trees.

Thinning Apple Fruits to Avoid Shrink and Worms
Advice from a historical orchard note stresses thinning when the set is established, removing blemished fruit and leaving the best on sunlit upper limbs. It recommends destroying thinnings to reduce worm infestations and advises using finger tips to pluck fruit off the stem rather than pulling the stem from the spur.
