Rallying Soviet armies resisted German advances along the Don river bend 80 miles northwest of Stalingrad and recaptured ground. The Wehrmacht pushed toward the Caucasus oil fields with spearheads 112 miles below the Don as fighting raged for Salsk and along a 150 mile front. Strong Soviet counterattacks near Rzhev, on the Volkhov front, and outside Leningrad were acknowledged.

Miss Mary Jane Macfie of Winnsboro South Carolina has accepted the post of executive secretary for the Winchester and Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The appointment was announced by John S. Scully, a committee member, after a telegram from Miss Macfie was received by chapter chairman Dc P. McVicar.
