A Winchester Star reader commends the women issuing special use sugar permits for their devotion to country amid a heavy rationing effort. The letter notes no permanent rationing system in Frederick County and the Winchester board bearing excess workload, hoping for a better plan in the future.

The Virginia Conservation Commission travel bureau in Washington distributed Virginia resort information to about 4000 people in June. Miss Evelyn R. Mullen directs the bureau with one assistant. Ten Northwest Airlines workers were killed when a U S Army cargo plane crashed on takeoff at Weld-Chamberlain field just before 8 am. The Boeing 247 carried 270 gallons of gasoline and, after bursting into flames, many bodies were too severely burned for identification. Names of the dead include Roy Josephson and James Painter of St Paul and Kenneth Olson of Minneapolis among others. the ship had been ferried by Northwest and used for a northern division cargo run.
James L. Denny visits Winchester at 81 and recalls witnessing the Garfield assassination via a Baltimore and Ohio rail yard job. He now lives in Columbia S C and was a newsboy when Garfield was shot. Denny notes changes in town hours since his youth and is welcomed by locals as a Hardy Kinzel relative.

Salt Lake City July 30 Donald Condit a hitchhiker was executed by firing squad for the murder of Harold A Thorne a Salt Lake City salesman. Condit earlier admitted the first degree murder after Thorne gave him a ride in Iron County five miles from the county line.
Henry J. Kaiser told a Senate defense panel that an order from the government would trigger converting part of his nine shipyards in California to build giant cargo planes to speed World War II. He said Bethlehem Steel would join if called, and that major steel firms would rise to the occasion.
In London July 30 Sir Stafford Cripps told Commons that government plans for a second front could not be divulged. He confirmed the information given last week and declined to reveal details even in secret session. Women war workers urged Churchill and Parliament to open a second front and pledged extra factory effort.
Mrs. Joseph S. Denny of White Post reports 49 acres at Ben Venue Farm yielded 994 bushels of wheat and 138 bushels of rye. She cites train sparks as a factor in lower wheat yields and mentions exhibiting corn at White Hall farm alongside show window displays and a fire company free inhalator service.
The Rev. Dr. Hubert Sydenstricker, longtime Methodist minister and Roanoke District superintendent, died after a brief illness. He served in Roanoke, Winchester, Blacksburg, Buena Vista, Fairfax Court House, Leesburg and others, taught at Randolph Macon Academy, and was linked to Pearl Buck. He headed the Roanoke district for five years and supported educational work.
George W Haddox a retired merchant aged 86 of Winchester is seriously ill at his residence 125 East Lane Avenue. A family member said he is holding his own. Haddox was the first depositor at Farmers & Merchants Bank and served on its board the City Council and Braddock Street Methodist Church official board. Last February he and Mrs Haddox celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
Capt. W. A. Baker reports VPF Company 115 will be inspected by Col. Everett A. Hellmuth, commander of the 11th Battalion, Friday night at the armory. All men ordered to be present in uniform at 7 p.m. as announced today.
